Picking Your Taxonomy Code
Your taxonomy code is the NUCC classification that tells payers what kind of provider you are. You entered one (or will) when you applied for your NPI, and the code in Practice Harbor should match what's on file with NPPES.
Where to enter it
- Go to Settings → Profile.
- Under Clinical Information, pick your code in the Taxonomy Code dropdown (it's searchable — type part of the name).
- Save. The code flows to your claims automatically.
Fully licensed clinicians
Pick the code that matches your license — the dropdown carries the common mental-health set:

Pre-licensed associates
NUCC has no separate "associate" codes. The taxonomy describes your discipline; your associate registration number and supervision arrangement describe your stage — supervision shows up in how claims are billed, not in your taxonomy. So use your discipline's base code:

Students and trainees
If you hold no license or associate registration at all (practicum student, pre-degree intern), use 390200000X — Student in an Organized Health Care Education/Training Program. It's the single NUCC code for all students and trainees, and it's what CMS expects on a student NPI application. The moment you receive an associate registration, switch to your discipline's base code above.
Good to know
- Supervised billing doesn't use your taxonomy. When your work bills under a supervisor, the claim carries the supervisor's credentials — see Billing Insurance Under Supervision. Your own taxonomy matters for your NPI record and payer enrollment paperwork.
- A few payers publish their own rules for associates (some want the student code for anyone unlicensed; a few don't enroll associates at all). If a payer rejects your enrollment over taxonomy, check that payer's guidance — don't shop for a different NUCC code.
- Keep NPPES in sync: if you update your taxonomy here after licensure, update your NPI record too.
